“A Graduation Suit Adorned with Embroidery Inspired by Nigerian Traditions!”

Hello everyone! This is Asaoka Embroidery from Asahi Town, Yamagata Prefecture.

We recently had the opportunity to create a special embroidered suit for a university graduation ceremony that expresses both individuality and cultural identity—by incorporating vibrant embroidery inspired by Nigerian traditions.

In Nigeria, it is customary to wear garments adorned with elaborate embroidery for graduation ceremonies. This time, we received a unique request from a student originally from Nigeria who was graduating from a university in Japan. They wanted to reflect their home country’s culture while participating in a Japanese-style ceremony. By adding luxurious, ornate embroidery to the collar and hem of a formal suit—like wearing exquisite jewelry—we crafted a suit that radiated elegance and was perfect for such a special occasion.

The final piece became a one-of-a-kind suit that beautifully blended Nigerian tradition with Japanese graduation culture. Through this project, we once again recognized how embroidery can celebrate cultural diversity and allow personal expression.
